I kept coming back to Hungary. So I stayed. This is where the notes live.
Hi, I'm Ray, an American living in Budapest. If you'd asked me years ago where I'd end up, Hungary wouldn't have made the list. I'd already lived elsewhere: Switzerland, Brazil, back home in the States. Years of traveling through music, then media production. I assumed the next place would just be another stop. Hungary became home instead. Not overnight. Slowly.
What a minute means
The only way I know to understand a place is to slow down, look closer, and write down what I see. That's where Magyar Minute came from. The name isn't literal; these aren't one-minute pieces. A minute, to me, is a unit of attention: one conversation, one street corner, one meal, one misunderstanding I had to ask my way out of, one small thing that opens the door to something bigger. Each post is one minute's worth of attention, expanded.
More than a feed
Most of these stories start as short videos, and they still live on TikTok and elsewhere. But platforms come and go, and I wanted the record to live somewhere that's mine: the writing, the transcripts, the places I mentioned, the people I learned from. This is that somewhere. And because these stories are about Hungary, they should be open to Hungarians: the videos carry captions in Hungarian and other languages, so people who do not speak English can enjoy them too. I'm not Hungarian, and I'm not really a tourist anymore either. I sit somewhere in between, which lets me notice what locals take for granted while knowing how much I still have to learn. Some of my favorite moments are when a comment starts with "Actually, here's what really happened."
Where this is going
Over time, this will become more than my notes. I want it to be a place where historians, artists, photographers, chefs, winemakers, and everyday Hungarians share the stories they know better than I ever could. No single person can capture a country. Together, we can get closer. Whether you've lived here your whole life, just arrived, or simply like seeing a place through someone else's eyes, I'm glad you found your way in.
