Ready Before the Moment
The most important decision of that night on the Danube was made hours earlier, quietly, at home. A note on getting ready for the opportunities you cannot yet see.

Notes
The microphones almost stayed in the drawer.
They’re small enough that leaving them behind would have been the easy decision. After all, the evening wasn’t supposed to be about interviews. It was simply another event on the calendar, another chance to meet people, shake hands, and enjoy a few conversations on the Danube.
Instead, they went into the inside pocket of a suit jacket. Just in case.
That decision probably took five seconds. Looking back, it may have been the most important one of the night.
People sometimes ask how I end up meeting so many interesting people.
The assumption is usually that there’s some secret to networking, or that I’m naturally outgoing, or that I somehow know exactly who I’m going to meet before I walk into a room.
None of that’s true.
What is true is that I’ve spent most of my life preparing for opportunities before I know what they are. That’s a very different way of looking at things.
Long before I ever lived in Hungary, I was producing music.
Like most people trying to build a career, I took projects that didn’t pay very well. Some didn’t pay at all.
Looking back, people might say I was giving my work away. I never thought of it like that.
I wasn’t collecting paychecks. I was collecting trust.
Every project became another chance for someone to remember my name the next time an opportunity appeared. I wasn’t trying to convince the whole world. I just wanted the next person to think, “You should talk to Ray.”
That philosophy never really changed. The industry did. The technology did. The countries did. The philosophy stayed exactly the same.
One of those bets was a show I created myself, Top DJ Interviews. The concept, the booking, the whole thing was mine, sitting down with the artists who came through Hungary on the summer club circuit. Nobody paid me to do it. I did it because I believed in it, and because I wanted to be the name those artists remembered later. One of them was Anthony Pappa.
Today, instead of recording artists, I often find myself recording conversations. The equipment is different. The thinking isn’t.
If I walk into a room, I want to be ready if something unexpected happens. Not because I expect it to. Because experience has taught me that the best moments almost never announce themselves in advance.
They’re usually disguised as ordinary conversations.
Not every conversation goes anywhere. That’s another lesson people don’t talk about enough.
Some people are busy. Some people aren’t interested. Some conversations last thirty seconds. Others change the direction of the next few years.
You don’t know which is which while you’re standing there. That’s why every interaction deserves the same respect.
I’ve also noticed something else. People spend a lot of time asking how to meet interesting people.
I think that’s the wrong question. The better question is this: What are you doing today that would make someone want to get in touch with you tomorrow?
Those are very different questions. One is about finding opportunities. The other is about becoming ready for them.
By the end of that evening on the Danube, the microphones had come out of my pocket after all. The interviews happened. New conversations began. The equipment did exactly what it was supposed to do.
But that isn’t really the story. The story is that the decision had already been made hours earlier. Quietly. At home. When nobody was watching.
Because opportunities rarely change your life the moment they appear. More often, they reward the preparation that happened long before they arrived.
Look closer.
